Biotechnology in Scotland
In Scotland, the number of individuals working in biotechnology
and its support industries has doubled in the last two years to over 18,000.
Scotland is now home to 49 biotechnology companies, including world leaders such as: the
Roslin Institute and PPL Therapeutics, whose major breakthrough was nuclear transfer; Cyclacel
headed up by Professor David Lane tackling methods of preventing the development of cancer;
and Neuropa which is at the leading edge of treatments for neuro-degenerative diseases such as
Alzheimer's.
Scottish Enterprise Biotechnology Group
The Scottish Enterprise Biotechnology Group was set up to act as
a catalyst for the emerging biotech sector and its aims are to:

Improve the commercial application of research.
Increase the number of sustainable start up companies in
Scotland
Increase companies' capability for growth.
Strengthen Scotland's Biotechnology cluster through
joint ventures, investment, development of export links and improving support infrastructure.

The Biotechnology Group is made up of technologists with
bio-industry experience, and, as well as offering every day business
development expertise, the Group works alongside Scottish Trade International and Locate in Scotland
to help internationalise the Scottish biotechnology industry through trade missions, exhibitions and
seminars.
The Group also works closely with each of the 13 local
enterprise companies to ensure business development opportunities throughout the industry are exploited to their full potential.
